THE GILDED CAGE Aethoria's system controlling magical power. Powerful magic remains in hands of those who already have power. TWO BARRIERS TO POWER: • Knowledge Lock: Advanced magical techniques restricted to noble houses, temples, and guilds. Commoners learn only Tier 1-2 magic. • Patronage Bond: Magical link to a patron required to exceed Tier 2. Without patron's amplification, most mages are permanently capped. RECRUITMENT: Talented commoners are spotted young. Scouts offer: "Join us. Receive education. Receive the bond. Become powerful. In exchange, serve." Most accept—it's the only path upward. THE UNALIGNED: Some slip through. Some refuse. Some escape after bonding. These are Unaligned: powerful mages with no master. How unaligned exist: • Self-taught from stolen texts (dangerous, unstable) • Blessed by god who asked nothing (rare, controversial) • Severed previous bond (traumatic, hunted) • Born with freakish talent (extremely rare, feared) Society treats unaligned as threats—ostracized, watched, restricted. They're legally required to register (few do). Barred from most guilds and academies. Many live on society's edges.
